Jung Enterprise, Inc. — Allan Jung Turned a Planting Season Headache Into a Patented Tool for Farmers

IPSWICH, S.D. Every farmer who has run a planter in wet ground knows the problem. Mud builds up on the gauge wheels, the wheels plug, and the whole operation stops while someone climbs down to clean them. Allan Jung lived with that problem for years. Eventually he decided to fix it.

Mr. Jung grew up on a farm in South Dakota and spent 29 years, from 1992 to 2021, working as a custom planter. Downtime from plugged gauge wheels was a constant part of the job, and it cost time, labor and money every season. The idea for a solution came to him quickly. Turning that idea into something farmers would actually want to use took much longer.

His answer was a durable steel ring that fits around the gauge wheel tire. It shields the tire from wear, works as a scraper and keeps the spoked wheel from packing with mud. The first version had to be welded on. Mr. Jung kept refining the design until it could simply be screwed onto the tire, which made installation far easier for farmers working on their own equipment. In 2023 he received a patent for the design.

He founded Jung Enterprise, Inc. in 2021 and serves as its president. Running the company means wearing many hats. He updates equipment for customers, works the booth at farm shows, answers questions and takes orders, runs the company's social media advertising and keeps an eye on the seasonal swings of the farm economy. During planting and harvest he is often out helping customers in person.

Getting the product off the ground took patience. For two and a half years he sold directly and traveled the farm show circuit. Word of mouth did the rest. Recommendations from satisfied growers carried the steel ring across the United States and into Canada and Central America, and thousands of units have now been sold through several companies.

Mr. Jung points to a few things behind that success. He saw a need that other farmers shared. Before launching his own business he was the top salesman for a gauge wheel company, which taught him the market. He also set up his own sourcing for gauge wheels to keep prices competitive. Most of all, he says, the product pays for itself by cutting down on tire adjustments, replacements and extra scrapers.

He has big plans for the years ahead. He wants to push sales further at home and abroad, and he sees room to grow as more farmers and equipment makers learn about the ring. One possibility is licensing or selling the patent to a major manufacturer, which would provide security for his family for generations.

When he is not working, Mr. Jung likes yard work, riding motorcycles, camping, fishing, hunting and running. He is also the person relatives call when a project around the house needs an extra pair of hands.

Dynamo Times recognizes Allan Jung for turning decades of field experience into a practical invention that saves farmers time and money.
