Dr. Cindy A. Okolo Brings Seventeen Years of Critical Care Experience to Primary Care in Rural Missouri
A nurse practitioner who trained in some of Chicago's busiest hospitals now cares for families at Missouri Highlands Health Care, with a simple rule: every patient deserves to be heard.

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. Dr. Cindy A. Okolo spent much of her career in rooms filled with monitors and alarms. Medical, surgical, neurological, transplant and cardiac intensive care units shaped how she works. Today she practices primary care at Missouri Highlands Health Care, and she brings that same focus to an exam room where the goal is keeping people well.
Dr. Okolo joined Missouri Highlands Health Care as a primary care provider in 2026. There she treats adults and families, manages long term conditions and builds care plans around each person's needs and goals. Her work has also included guiding patients through modern weight management treatment, including GLP 1 medications, as part of a wider plan for their health.
Her clinical path runs through some of the Midwest's largest health systems. She has cared for patients at the University of Chicago Medicine, the University of Illinois Chicago, Advocate Christ Medical Center and Advocate South Suburban Hospital. She has also worked at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Ottumwa Regional Hospital, Goshen General Hospital and Elkhart General Hospital. Across those settings she managed high acuity patients, many with complex heart and neurological conditions, and learned how much good care depends on a strong team.
Over more than seventeen years, her practice has covered critical care, internal medicine, family medicine and dermatology. She has also taught nursing students online, and mentoring new nurses remains one of the parts of the job she enjoys most.
Her education followed her career step by step. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chicago State University in 2007, a Master of Science in Nursing on the family nurse practitioner track from Governors State University in 2017, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Midwestern University in 2025.
Dr. Okolo is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American Nurses Association, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Missouri Association of Nurse Practitioners. She holds Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support certifications.
Her work has drawn recognition in 2026, including an America's Best in Medicine award and a Pinnacle Professional of the Year honor.
Outside the clinic she has volunteered at nursing career fairs and fundraisers and supported health awareness efforts on HIV and AIDS, breast cancer and heart disease. She speaks English and Igbo and feels at home in diverse teams and communities.
For Dr. Okolo, medicine has always felt like a calling. She plans to continue her clinical work at Missouri Highlands Health Care while building a new healthcare business with her husband, Ugochukwu Egolum, MD.
Dynamo Times recognizes Dr. Cindy A. Okolo for a career that pairs critical care skill with patient care built on listening, trust and respect.
