Travelers — From Submarine Duty to Church Deacon, Lawrence Steven Cosentino Treats Risk Control as Another Form of Service

OSSINING, N.Y. The year 2022 brought Lawrence Steven Cosentino two new titles. He joined Travelers as a risk control consultant, and Village Lutheran Church in Bronxville commissioned him as a deacon. One role has him checking machinery and buildings for hazards; the other has him looking after a congregation. He sees a common thread in both.

That thread starts in the United States Navy. From 2006 to 2014 Cosentino served as a nuclear electrician, working with steam powered systems aboard the submarines USS Jacksonville and USS Missouri. On a submarine, one person's lapse can endanger the whole crew, and checking the work is a duty owed to everyone aboard.

He has kept close to fellow veterans since coming home. Cosentino belongs to VFW Post 2285 and American Legion Post 979 and is active with the Eastchester Veterans Foundation. He has also given time to his community outside those circles, including the Malta Clean Up in 2015.

His civilian career built on the same technical base. He worked as a senior technician on the emergency response team at GlobalFoundries, then as a maintenance supervisor at Gourmet Boutique. Each job put him close to equipment that people depended on and to the question of what happens when it fails.

That question became his specialty at Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, where he worked as a loss control specialist. In 2019 the company gave him an award for exemplary integrity, a recognition that matters in a trade where insurers and public authorities trust an inspector to report exactly what he finds.

At Travelers his fieldwork centers on equipment and property. He visits client sites, studies how machinery and buildings are used and maintained, and identifies exposures that could lead to liability or loss. His findings serve the insurer, the client and the jurisdictions that oversee safety, which gives the work a public side many people never see.

Cosentino is also known for questioning routine. Rather than accepting a procedure because it has always been done that way, he has reviewed outdated practices and found savings, work credited with helping avoid substantial inspection costs that a city would otherwise have required.

He brings formal method to that instinct. Cosentino holds Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt certifications from Villanova University, and he has been pursuing a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Business Analytics. The analytics training lets him pair what he sees on site with what the numbers show over time.

His education began in technology. Cosentino earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems in 2005 from Manhattan College, the school now known as Manhattan University, a year before he enlisted.

Across submarine compartments, factory floors, boiler rooms and a church in Bronxville, the pattern holds. Cosentino pays attention to the details that keep people safe, and he reports them honestly.

Dynamo Times recognizes Lawrence Steven Cosentino for a career of service that runs from the Navy's submarine fleet to insurance risk control, and for the time he gives to his church and to fellow veterans.
