Webb & Associates Secures Landmark $180M Environmental Settlement
Historic verdict sets new precedent for corporate environmental accountability
NEW YORK — Webb & Associates today announced the successful resolution of a landmark environmental case resulting in a $180 million settlement — the largest of its kind in the state's history.
The settlement resolves claims brought on behalf of more than 12,000 residents in three rural counties whose groundwater was contaminated by a chemical manufacturer's waste disposal practices over a period of more than two decades.
The settlement includes $120 million for remediation of the contaminated sites and $60 million in compensation for affected residents. It also requires the company to fund independent environmental monitoring for 20 years.
"This verdict establishes that companies cannot externalize the cost of their decisions onto communities that have no power to fight back," said Marcus Webb, senior partner at Webb & Associates. The case is expected to set new precedent for corporate environmental accountability in cases involving legacy contamination and multi-generational corporate ownership.
