Stanford University Awards $40M Federal Grant to Quantum Computing Lab
NSF investment accelerates Prof. Nakamura's groundbreaking research into practical quantum applications
STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford University announced today that the National Science Foundation has awarded a $40 million grant to the Nakamura Quantum Computing Laboratory, the largest single federal investment in quantum computing research in the university's history.
The five-year grant will fund research in three areas: error correction algorithms, quantum networking, and the development of hybrid classical-quantum computing architectures for practical deployment.
"We're not trying to build the fastest quantum computer," said Professor James Nakamura, who leads the laboratory. "We're trying to build the first one that a hospital, or a bank, or a logistics company can actually use. That's the harder problem. And it's the more important one."
The Nakamura Laboratory has been at the forefront of practical quantum computing research since its founding in 2015, with a focus on error correction and stability that has distinguished its approach from much of the broader field.
The NSF grant is expected to support a team of 40 researchers, including 15 doctoral students and 8 postdoctoral fellows.
