Dr. Kwame Asante Receives Presidential Innovation Award for Solar Research

MIT engineer's third-generation photovoltaic technology achieves record 47% efficiency

MIT Energy InitiativeCambridge, MAAugust 8, 2026

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Dr. Kwame Asante, PhD, has been awarded the Presidential Medal for Innovation in recognition of his revolutionary work in next-generation solar cell technology.

Dr. Asante's third-generation photovoltaic cell achieves a record 47% efficiency — more than double the commercial standard — through a manufacturing technique adapted from semiconductor fabrication that makes the technology economically viable at scale.

"The physics was always there," said Dr. Asante. "The challenge was the manufacturing. How do you make something this precise at a cost that actually changes lives?"

The technology is currently powering communities in Ghana, India, and Brazil, with the MIT Energy Initiative estimating that widespread adoption could reduce the cost of solar energy by 60% within a decade.

Dr. Asante will receive the medal at a White House ceremony next month.
